D.C.-area forecast: Heat to slowly ease after today as storm chances return newsbhunt

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

1/10: I say with regret, today you will sweat, for the heat is not done with us yet.

  • Today: Partly sunny, humid, possible p.m. storms. Highs: 93-97
  • Tonight: Partly cloudy with a few showers and storms. Lows: 68-72
  • Tomorrow: Partly sunny, humid, likely p.m. showers and storms. Highs: 88-92

The relief from this heat wave arrives in slow motion with today still a scorcher and temperatures only slipping back to seasonable lower 80s on the weekend. We are also stuck in a rut because of a front stalling over the area with shower and storm chances for at least the next four days. Most models project about an inch of needed rain on average, but amounts will vary location to location.

Today (Thursday): Another day of heat and humidity with light south winds under mostly sunny skies. By later in the afternoon, some showers and storms are likely to bubble up — especially in our western areas — but should be widely scattered in nature. Highs peak mainly in the mid-90s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Some showers and storms could linger well into the evening but are likely to be very hit or miss. A few could be intense with damaging wind gusts. Clouds linger overnight with lows near 70. Winds are light from the southwest. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Friday): Humidity is still uncomfortable, but the heat is finally waning with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Clouds still pop up with the heat and another round of scattered showers and storms seems likely for the later in the afternoon. Winds are light from the south. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: A few of the showers and storms are likely to linger through the evening but should dissipate after midnight. Lows settle in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

The only notable change on the weekend is diminishing heat with highs in the mid- to upper 80s Saturday and low to mid-80s Sunday. Otherwise, it is more of the moderately high humidity and late afternoon and evening chances for showers and storms. Overnight lows slip to the mid- to upper 60s. Confidence: Medium

Most of the showers head up to New England on Monday, but an isolated afternoon shower is still a risk. Seasonable warmth and a little less humidity are welcome with highs mainly in the lower 80s. Confidence: Medium
