Louisiana State Police have finished removing vehicles and other debris involved in Monday’s Interstate 55 crash. The Department of Transportation and Development confirmed late Tuesday that they now have inspectors on site, assessing any damage to the bridge. The interstate will remain closed overnight so those inspections can continue Wednesday, a DOTD spokesperson confirmed.”We will … do a complete and thorough bridge inspection to see if the bridge needs to be repaired, if it can be fully opened, one lane open, load posted,” said Rodney Mallett, with DOTD. “There’s a lot of different options that can go into play, and that’s why there’s really no timeframe for something like this.” I-55 was shut down in both directions for several miles before reopening partially Tuesday. It is now closed only between the Ponchatoula and Ruddock exits. Northbound traffic is able to travel on the elevated portion of I-55 to the Ruddock exit, where traffic will be diverted to Highway 51.Southbound traffic can also enter the interstate at Ruddock from Highway 51.
