‘X’ user’s post on women engaging in ‘unprotected sex’ and taking contraceptive pills ‘unnecessarily’ gets massive thumbs down on the internet.

A user on the micro-blogging site ‘X’ recently sparked a significant controversy after sharing a post regarding the side effects of contraceptive pills on women while attributing their usage to engaging in ‘unprotected sex,’ which, in turn, he suggested, led to potential harm to their health. This post garnered a substantial backlash on social media, with users vehemently criticising the one-sided blame on women and expressing doubts about the user’s knowledge concerning contraceptive pills.

The entire episode was initiated by the user @Prateek_Aaryan, who posted a screenshot of a woman displaying a packet of contraceptive pills, humourously referring to it as a ‘girl breakfast.’ In a lengthy message, he commented, “Women nowadays are stooping to new lows; initially, they engage in unprotected sex and rely on contraceptive pills shown in TV ads to prevent unwanted pregnancies, which are not completely safe and can harm their bodies.”

He proceeded to list the side effects of these pills. Little did he realise that his ‘superficial’ choice of words and lack of credible sources would turn him into an online target.

Here’s the Viral Post:

“This is what happens when you just google stuff without going deep into the literature or consulting an expert in the field. Emergency contraception like i-pill are completely safe. Whatever side effects they have are temporary, including that on mense,” remarked one user. “Just wanna say one thing, being a MBBS student, before posting such thing just do some research. Just read about Epills from some gyne textbook or talk to ur faculty. Then you will get to know more. Such tweets just spread misinformation in public,” commented another.

In the meantime, those who perceived this post as derogatory toward women also began trolling him. “Thanks for this eyeopening tweet bro…I was having a hard time explaining to few of my friends what exactly is mansplaining. Now, I can simply show this,” one user sarcastically noted. “If you really care about women’s health, there is an easy way to stop this. When misogynists like you start using condoms, or better still, get a vasectomy done, women will no longer need to take the pill. Until that day, please sit down,” criticised another user.

Since the initial post, it has amassed over 2.7 million views on the platform. While the poster continued to defend his viewpoint in a series of posts, the trolls persisted, compelling him to make a last-ditch effort.

In a final message, he wrote, “Dear men, wear a condom to protect yourself and your partner from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). Refrain from engaging in unprotected sex.”
